Description | This consists of the old Glasgow Maryhill seat minus Milton, Ashfield and Keppochhill wards, which go to Glasgow North East, with the addition of Kelvindale from the old Glasgow Anniesland seat and Hyndland, Hillhead and Partick from the old Glasgow Kelvin constituency. It extends west from Charing Cross on the fringes of the city centre, taking in Glasgow University and the Partick area. It stretches north through the upmarket tenements and townhouses of Hillhead, Dowanhill and relatively-leafy North Kelvinside and then extends across Great Western Road to Kelvindale, into more working class Maryhill and Ruchill, and on to the peripheral Summerston housing estate. On paper, this is the most middle class of Glasgow seats. In reality, it represents probably the broadest range of social circumstances in any of the city seats. While it contains the wealthy and bohemian West End, it also covers some of the most deprived areas in the country. There is a sizeable student population and a large ethnic minority representation. Other features of this constituency are the Forth and Clyde Canal, Partick Thistle Football Club, and the headquarters of BBC Scotland.
