Description | This consists of the whole of the old Falkirk West seat including a ward shared with the old Falkirk East seat, and six wards from the old Falkirk East seat. The constituency sits south west of the River Forth. There are a number of rural areas to the south and west, but the constituency is dominated by the town of Falkirk itself, with other smaller industrial towns such as Bonnybridge, Denny, Dunipace and Larbert. The region's industrial heritage is based on iron, although coal-mining also played its part, as in many areas of low-lying central Scotland. Today the iron foundries are no more, but there are a few light industries which offer employment in the area. Private house building is enjoying a current boom. The seat is dominated by the spectacular Falkirk Wheel, sited where the Forth and Clyde and Union canals join up. The world's first rotating boat lift has proved to be a very popular tourist attraction, attracting many visitors to the area, and winning international awards for its innovation.
