| Description | This consists of the whole of the old Galloway & Upper Nithsdale constituency (with the exception of three wards shared with the old Dumfries constituency) plus 11 wards from the old Dumfries constituency. Two wards shared between the two constituencies are now within Dumfries & Galloway constituency. The Dumfries urban area is the main population centre. Dumfries is a market town and the commercial and administrative headquarters of the region. Manufacturing has declined but there is still some light industry. The constituency's second town is Stranraer where economic activity is dominated by the ferry links from Northern Ireland to both Stranraer and its near-neighbour Cairnryan. Other main towns are Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbright, Dalbeattie and Newton Stewart, which are surrounded by large tracts of farming lands and the Galloway Forest Park. The area was badly affected by the foot-and-mouth outbreak of 2001.
