| Description | Wrexham is traditional Labour territory. However the former Labour MP for Wrexham John Marek left Parliament in 2001 to concentrate on his assembly career. During the first term as Wrexham's assembly member he clashed a number of times with the Cardiff Bay leadership and in his constituency. Following his deselection, he stood against the official Labour candidate and won with a majority of less than 1,000. He has since set up his own party, joined by the former Labour Welsh Secretary Ron Davies, Forward Wales. They are putting up another candidate here for the general election. As north Wales's biggest town, Wrexham has developed as an important regional centre for north east Wales. An industrial and market town close to the English border, Wrexham has fared better than many similar communities in successfully diversifying its economy while its traditional employers, steel and coal have run down, and has attracted well-known names such as Kellogg and Sharp. More than 7,000 people work at 200 companies on the sprawling industrial estate in the area. Wrexham Football Club went into administration in 2004.
