Description | First created in 1947, abolished in 1984 and recreated in 1992, Paterson covers an area of approximately 6 652 sq km and is located north of Newcastle. The main towns in this division include Nelson Bay, Bulahdelah, Clarence Town, Forster, Hawks Nest, Lemon Tree Passage, Medowie, Anna Bay, Morpeth, Tuncurry, Paterson, Raymond Terrace, Dungog and Stroud. It also includes parts of East Maitland, Nabiac and Thornton. It was after Australian poet and author, Andrew 'Banjo' Paterson, though there is some conjecture it was named after Colonel William Paterson, who has a river and town named after him in the area.
