Description | This riding is located in the eastern end of Montreal. The riding is bounded by Rivière-des-Prairies in the north, the St. Lawrence River in the east, Rue de Cadillac in the south and Sherbrooke Street East, the southwest limit of the former Montréal-Est, Boulevard Henri-Bourassa and Highway 40 in the east.
The riding is highly industrialized, with oil refineries, high technology industries and some steel manufacturing. The average family income is $53,908 with unemployment of 7.7 per cent.
This riding is mainly francophone, and according to the 2001 census, 86 per cent have French as a mother tongue. There is also a significant Italian community in the riding. About 55 per cent are renters.
In 2004, all of Mercier riding, three per cent of Hochelaga-Maisonneuve and a small area from Anjou-Rivière-des-Prairies were combined into La Pointe-de-l'Île. This riding was established in 1933 as Mercier. From 1981-1987, it was Montreal-Mercier. In 1996, 10 per cent of the riding moved into Hochelaga-Maisonneuve.
