Description | This riding encompasses Burnaby south of the Kingsway and between the east and west city limits, with North Arm and Annacis Channel forming the southern boundary. In the southeast it also contains part of New Westminster. The 2001 census counted 111,048 residents, of whom more than 46 per cent are immigrants. Nearly 19 per cent of residents are ethnically Chinese. Nearly half of all dwellings in this riding are rentals.
This riding has a diverse economy, including retail, manufacturing and other services. The average family income is $58,734; unemployment is 9.1 per cent. About 16 per cent of residents hold university degrees.
Burnaby-New Westminster was created in 2004 by combining sections of New Westminster-Coquitlam-Burnaby and Vancouver South-Burnaby with a smaller portion of Burnaby-Douglas.
