Description | Regional Councils are the highest decision-making bodies of a region (aka, welfare region; hyvinvointialueet; välfärdsområden). The Council selects members of all regional government bodies and institutions in the area, and is responsible for their operation and finances. The Western Uusimaa Regional Council is responsible for the western parts of the Uusimaa region and the former Western Uusimaa region that was completely merged with Uusimaa Province on January 1, 2011. These include the six cities within Western Uusimaa; Hanko, Karkkila (Högfors), Kauniainen (Grankulla); Lohja (Lojo), Raseborg, and Espoo (Esbo). Council has 79 councilors. The Council is led by a chairman, who is elected by majority vote of the Council. |
