Description | Counties of the State of Hawai'i
Hawai'i does not have a system of autonomous incorporated cities and towns. Instead, the state is divided into four major counties each headed by an elected mayor and city council. The counties are Honolulu, Kaua'i, Mau'i and Hawai'i. A fifth county, Kalawao County is a portion of the island of Moloka'i that is administered by the State of Hawai'i Department of Health. Kalawao was made famous by Father Damien de Veuster, the Belgian Catholic priest tending to the county's lepers. Hawai'i's unique county system was implemented by the Territorial Legislature in 1905.
County Organization
Hawai'i's counties are organized under the Hawai'i State Association of Counties, an affiliate of the National Association of Counties. You can contact HSAC through 4396 Rice Street, Lihue, HI 96766-1371, Phone (808) 547-7001, Fax (808) 566-1184.
