Medinat Yisra'el
The first United Nations established government, the State of Israel is located in the Middle East bordering the Mediterranean Sea between Egypt and Lebanon. Its territories were once the British colony of Palestine. The United Nations originally created two independent Arab and Israeli states but territorial occupation by Israel has stymied the creation of an independent Arab-led Palestine. Violence continues today concerning the establishment of Palestine as a nation of its own. Slightly smaller than New Jersey, Israel is comprised of six districts: Central, Haifa, Jerusalem, Northern, Southern, Tel Aviv. It also claims over 500 settlements in the Palestinian holdings of the West Bank, Golan Heights and East Jerusalem.
Israel is a parliamentary democracy led by its President, elected by the nation's parliament for a seven-year term. The President appoints a member of the ruling party in parliament to create a coalition government. That member assumes the role of Prime Minister. Legislation is the jurisdiction of parliament in the unicameral Knesset, comprised of 120 seats elected by popular vote. |
