Description | The Budapest General Assembly was created upon the dissolved Budapest City Council (Budapest Főváros Tanácsából) after the end of Communist rule in the People's Republic of Hungary as a result of the Rendszerváltás ("Change of Regime") which began on June 16, 1989. The Budapest General Assembly consists of 33 members, which include the victors of mayoral elections in 23 districts, a change brought about by the 2011 Act on Hungarian Local Governments which modified the composition of the Assembly. Nine additional members are chosen by political parties, and a remaining single member is the Mayor of Budapest, who is the only member directly elected to the Assembly. Each member serves a five-year term. |
