Description | This urban/rural riding is located north of Montreal. It contains the regional county municipality of Matawinie, including the Atikamekw de Manawan Indian Reserve, and the municipality of Joliette.
The largest employer is the manufacturing sector, followed by retail trade, health and social services and other services. Almost 92 per cent of the population have French as a mother tongue, and the total immigrant population is just under two per cent. Almost 15 per cent of the population have less than a Grade 9 education. The average family income is $50,409 with an unemployment rate of 9.6 per cent.
In 2004, only the northern part of the riding, about 55 per cent of the old Joliette, has been retained and merged with 33 per cent of Berthier-Montcalm. The riding of Joliette was created in 1867, abolished in 1933, then re-established in 1966. The 1996 redistribution kept 71 per cent of the riding and added eight per cent of Berthier-Montcalm.
