Description | Originally called the province of Genoa (provincia di Genova), the province was renamed the "Metropolitan City of Genoa" (Città metropolitana di Genova) under the "reform of local authorities" (Law 142/1990) approved by the Italian Parliament on April 7, 2014 (Law 56/2014). The Law established 14 "metropolitan cities" which replaced various provinces in Italy. The Law also abolished Genoa's provincial government and office of president, replacing the provincial government with a municipal council and moving up the mayor of the provincial capital (i.e., the city of Genova) to "metropolitan mayor." The Metropolitan City of Genoa officially took the place of the dissolved province of the same name on January 1, 2015.
The province contains 67 municipalities (comuni) and a population of 815,532 (as of 10-31-2023). |
