Description | This Greater Toronto Area riding contains part of the town of Markham and part of the city of Vaughan. Its boundaries are Highway 404 in the east, Highway 400 in the west, Steeles Avenue in the south and Rutherford Road, Bathurst Street and Highway 7 in the north.
Manufacturing and retail trade are the main employers. Average family income is $102,459 and unemployment is 4.9 per cent.
According to the 2001 census, the immigrant population is over 46 per cent and only 55 per cent have English as their mother tongue. There are significant Italian, Chinese, East Indian and Jewish communities.
The riding of Thornhill was created in 1996 from 21 per cent of York North and 26 per cent of Markham-Whitchurch-Stouffville. |
