Description | Located in southwest Alberta, this rural riding stretches from Waterton Lakes National Park in the south to west and south of Calgary in the north. Communities include High River, Okotoks, Vulcan, Pincher Creek, Fort Macleod and Claresholm, as well as the southern tip of Banff. Several First Nations reserves are also here: the Blood reserve in the southeast corner, the Tsuu T'ina Nation west of Calgary, the Peigan reserve in the south, and the Siksika reserve in the northeast corner.
Overall, aboriginals account for about one-fifth of residents. Another nine per cent are immigrants. According to the 2001 census, the total population is 97,578.
Agriculture is the main industry here. The average family income is $76,007, while unemployment is 5.5 per cent.
The riding of Macleod has been largely unaltered by the past two redistributions. In 2004 it lost about six per cent of its former area while adding small sections from the Lethbridge, Medicine Hat and Wild Rose ridings.
