| Description | Part of the former 'Rājputāna' region (or 'Land of the Rajputs') and India's Largest state by area. Rajasthan translates as 'Land of the Kings' ("Raja" or king; "sthan" or land).
Region was known as the Kingdom of Marwar from 1226 to 1818 and the princely state of Jodhpur under British rule from 1818 to 1947. It was the largest among the Rajputana states under British control.
The last Maharajah of Jodhpur State signed over sovereignty to the Indian Union on April 7, 1949.
Hindi is the official language and its capital is Jaipur. |
