Description | Once known as the Kingdom of Travancore, which reigned between 1500 to 1949. Brought under British protection in 1795, the region was unified and became the independent state of Travancore.
After Indian independence, Travancore and Cochin (now Kochi) merged to form Travancore-Cochin on July 1, 1949. Boundaries were redrawn along linguistic lines on November 1, 1956, following passage of the States Reorganisation Act, to corral speakers of Malayalam, the language of the Malayalis people. The state was then renamed Kerala.
The Malayalis are descendants of Dravidians driven southward between 2000 and 1500 BC during the Aryan invasion of the Indian subcontinent.
Kerala was the first state to democratically elect a Communist government (1957), which has remained dominant to date.
The capital is Thiruvananthapuram |
