DescriptionFormer princely state of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) ruled by Dogra Rajputs until 1952.

Upon invasion by allies of Pakistan on its northwest, the Maharaja of J&K sought India's protection, signing the Instrument of Accession on October 26, 1947, which turned J&K into a 'special autonomous state' directly administered by the Indian central government.

Parts of the territory in 1947 were taken by China and Pakistan and are separated by 'Lines of Control' (LoC). The 55% of the territory India held onto constitute what is current-day Jammu and Kashmir.

India on August 5, 2019 announced its intention to split the state into two Union Territories – Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. The "Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019" (Act No. 34 of 2019 [Link] ) as it is called, was passed by India's upper chamber, the Rajya Sabha, on August 5, 2019, and its lower chamber, the Lok Sabha, on August 6, 2019 and signed into law on August 9, 2019.

Legal actions in objection may be considered and decided by India's Supreme Court.

Barring intervention by the Court, the Act will come into effect on October 31, 2019.
