Description | Gujarat took its name from the Gurjaras, an ancient sub-tribe of the Huns which dominated the area between 700 to 800 AD. After a long period of Muslim rule, particularly under the Mughals, Gujarat came under Maratha rule, who were in turn defeated by the British in the final phase of the English-Maratha Wars.
The British then established the Bombay Presidency (also for a time known as Bombay and Sind and the Bombay Province) which administered Gujarat (and a part of present-day Maharashtra), and the many, mostly Muslim princely states within. Each princely state would face a fork in the road later in 1947; cede independence to either India or Pakistan?
Gujarati is the state's official language and Gandhinagar is its capital. |
