Description | The vice presidency of the Russian Federation was a short-lived office elected alongside the president. The vice president was first in line of political succession should the president leave office prior to the completion of their term or if the president becomes incapable of carrying out their executive duties.
The vice president must be between the ages of 35 and 65 upon taking office and eligible to vote. They cannot simultaneously hold any other political office.
Aleksandr Rutskoi was the only person elected to the vice presidency. The position was abolished following the 1993 constitutional crisis, a stand-off between President Yeltsin and the parliament. During this crisis Yeltsin was impeached and Rutskoi became acting president, though Yeltsin had previously dissolved the parliament and did not accept their authority to oppose him. |
