Description | The prime minister is normally appointed by the president and confirmed by the National Assembly for an indefinite term. This routine began to bobble in early 2019 when prime minister Jean-Henry Céant was ousted illicitly by the National Assembly on March 18, 2019. A battle between the Assembly and President Moïse for his replacement culminated in the appointment of Joseph Jouthe as prime minister on March 2, 2020 by decree. Abuse of presidential decree powers continued until Moïse was assassinated on June 7, 2021. His last act on June 6, 2021 was to designate Ariel Henry prime minister, an act disputed by interim prime minister and acting president Claude Joseph, who seized control and assumed both titles, until relinquishing control to Henry on July 5, 2021. |
