Info | Many of you have been a part of my life since I began my career as a businessman. I learned the value of hard work as a young man growing up on a small farm in Western Oklahoma. I put myself through school working as a janitor, and achieved an excellent education from both the University of Oklahoma and Harvard Business School.
My first post-graduate job was as assistant provost for the University of Oklahoma Medical Center. That experience provided me with a real sense of how important higher education is to the growth of our state. It also opened my eyes to the challenges facing our state in the area of health care.
Following my days at OU Medical Center, I tackled the world of private business. I developed a highly successful real estate development firm, and these days find me building an even more successful venture in the international power industry.
I was elected Governor of my home state of Oklahoma when I was 38 years old. At the time it made me the second youngest Governor in the United States. My term was marked by bold programs in education, job creation, infrastructure funding and government reorganization. I was elected by my fellow Democratic Governors to lead them in 1992.
My wife, Rhonda, and I have been married for 31 years. We have three daughters ages 26, 21 and 15. We know how important family is to Oklahomans. As we go along, I hope to tell each and every Oklahoma family how I plan to make their lives better.
