Info | Sabra Pierce Scott is a native Clevelander and a lifelong resident of the Glenville neighborhood. She graduated from Laurel School in 1977 and earned a bachelor's degree in American History from Case Western Reserve University in 1982.
Upon graduation from Case Western Reserve University, she began setting the foundation for her future work as a Cleveland City Councilwoman, a task she would begin in November 2001.
To groom herself for this position, Pierce Scott worked as a Neighborhood Planner with the city of Cleveland's Department of Community Development, where she was responsible for planning, implementing and monitoring housing and commercial development projects. Notable projects under her direction include the former Rock Glen Townhouses (now known as Omni Vue), the Glenville Plaza, and the Walter Burks Playground. She served in this capacity until 1986 when she was appointed Administrative Assistant to Cleveland City Council.
Through this position, Pierce Scott became familiar with the intricacies of City Council and the legislative process. She worked with and staffed council committees, and resolved constituents' complaints and concerns. She served as Administrative Assistant to two Council Presidents and is credited with developing and planning projects and programs that helped to improve the quality of life for citizens of the City of Cleveland.
During her tenure as Administrative Assistant to Cleveland City Council, she developed and coordinated the city's first annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Celebration and the nationally recognized "Closing the Loop in Cleveland", the city's first recycling conference. She assisted with the planning and development of the East Side Market, the Lakeview-Superior Finast (Tops) Supermarket and the Glenville Common Townhouses.
In 1992, Pierce Scott demonstrated her commitment to youth when she established PEACE, a city program designed to heighten community awareness on the alarming rate of handgun violence affecting youth in the city.
In 1994, she joined Bank One as a Branch Manager and in 1995 earned officer status. As the Glenville Branch Manager, Pierce Scott created an innovative program to provide consumer credit counseling seminars for her clients. Her most memorable accomplishment was being selected to dialogue with former Vice President Al Gore on the importance of community reinvestment.
After a short stint as a homemaker, she taught at Glenville High School during the first half of the 1999-2000 school year. During this time, she gained a broader perspective on youth and the daily challenges they face. She also gained a sincere appreciation for the joys and challenges of educators.
Pierce Scott's involvement with civic organizations, such as the National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials, not only demonstrates her commitment to non-profit agencies but also shows her familiarity with issues important to the city and its residents. Among her present and past affiliations are the: Northeast Neighborhood Development Corporation, Commission on Catholic Community Action, ParkWorks, Urban Bankers of Greater Cleveland, NAACP African American Family Picnic, the Glenville Development Corporation and the Glenville Community Festival Foundation.
She has received numerous awards and honors including the State of Ohio Minority Business Initiatives Award, Sister to Sister Entrepreneurial Excellence Award, Community Re-Entry Right Relationship Award, the Pal Five Dixon Raiders Appreciation Award and the Glenville Citizen of the month.
