Info | Eric's Roots
Eric was born and raised in Senate District 14, and still lives in the Barelas neighborhood where he grew up. His family goes back more than ten generations in New Mexico.
Eric is the youngest of five children, raised by a single mother who worked two jobs to make ends meet.
Growing up, his family went to Sacred Heart Catholic Church where faith, community and culture were an important part of his upbringing. Today, he remains an active member of his church and serves as the Youth Choir Leader.
At age four, Eric was enrolled in Headstart. In fact, he entered one of the first classes of Headstart ever offered in Albuquerque. He knows, firsthand, how programs that invest in children can help the entire family.
Eric's Proven Leadership
Eric is currently the Executive Director for New Mexico Voices for Children, a non-profit statewide research and advocacy organization dedicated to improving the well-being of New Mexico's children, youth and families.
Appointed by Governor Bill Richardson to serve as Assistant Secretary for the New Mexico Economic Development Department, Eric spearheaded key efforts to spur job growth and small business development in rural and depressed areas of the state.
On Albuquerque's City Council, Eric represented District 3 - including the Barelas, Downtown, Kirtland Addition, South Broadway, San Jose, Clayton Heights, Vecinos del Bosque, UNM and Westside areas from 2001 - 2005.
As City Councilor, Eric sponsored nearly 200 bills and worked successfully with his colleagues to pass over 80 percent of them. He co-sponsored the Planned Growth Strategy, the Albuquerque Clean Indoor Air Ordinance and several economic development initiatives including the Local Economic Development Act, which allowed the city to better promote economic development.
His Quarter Cent for Public Safety Initiative, passed overwhelmingly by the voters, put 100 new cops on the street, built new fire stations, and provided sorely needed treatment and prevention programs.
He received a national award for legislation that made Albuquerque the second city in the nation to allow "Clean Money" public financing of local elections. He also passed legislation to create an office of Inspector General in the City of Albuquerque to investigate fraud and abuse in local government.
Eric Griego has over two decades of practicing, teaching and studying public policy, including working at the local, state, national and international level.
Eric's experience includes:
* Executive Director, NM Voices for Children
* Assistant Secretary, NM Economic Development Department, 2005-2007
* Albuquerque City Councilor, 2001-2005
* Chair, State Economic Development Commission, 2002-2005
* President, New Mexico Municipal League, 2005
* Part-time instructor, CNM, UNM, 2000-2007
* President, Small Business Owner, Engaging Communication, 2001-2005
* M.P.A., University of Maryland, Public Management, 1991
* B.A., New Mexico State University, Journalism and Government, 1989
Why I'm Running for State Senate - We Need Real Change in Santa Fe
We need leaders in Santa Fe who are committed to championing the interests of our community - not the special interests of corporate lobbyists.
I will fight for comprehensive healthcare reform that puts people - not insurance companies - - first. I will fight for quality schools for our kids because I know the value of public education. I will lead efforts to reform ethics and campaign finance laws to restore confidence in state government. I will also focus my energies on getting the resources our district needs for the roads, parks and community facilities that improve the quality of life for our families.
