| Info | Barbara McCarthy is a Yanyuwa woman from Borroloola in the Northern Territory.
Barbara is Northern Territory born and bred. Born in Katherine in 1970, Barbara attended school in Borroloola, Alice Springs and St. Scholasticas in Glebe, Sydney, where she was School Captain in 1988.
Barbara started her career as a cadet journalist at ABC Darwin in 1989 in the TV Newsroom.
In 1990 Barbara transferred to the Sydney TV Newsroom doing general reporting duties, then gaining experience as News Presenter, filling in behind Clive Hale when he was on recreational leave or sick leave.
At the end of 1992, Barbara came back to Darwin to present the Northern Territory news for ABC Television.
Barbara moved back to Sydney in 1994 where she worked for the ABC Indigenous arts program “Blackout” as a reporter/producer.
Barbara went home to Borroloola in 1995 to organise the inaugural Lijakarda Cultural Festival.
During1996, Barbara worked as reporter/director on the highly commended ABC TV Compass Documentary program Stolen Children in Sydney.
In 1997 Barbara returned to Borroloola to teach at the Lijakarda Arts Culture and Media Training Centre and to organise the second cultural festival.
Barbara also co-established with her husband Norm Grogan, the first community radio station (B102.4FM) in the Gulf of Carpentaria.
In 1998 she came back to the ABC Radio Newsroom in Darwin and in June 1999, was announced as the ABC Northern Territory News presenter.
From 1997 to 1999 Barbara represented the Northern Territory on the Australia Arts Council’s Community Cultural Development Fund and is currently the patron for SIDS in the Northern Territory.
In February 2001, Barbara became the presenter of the Territory wide Stateline program in the new time slot of 7.30pm Fridays.
Barbara won the NT Hearing Awareness Week award for her clear enunciation and news reading style in 2002.
In 2004 Barbara transferred with the ABC to Alice Springs for 6months, reporting on local news for national consumption, then returned to Darwin in September.
Barbara and Norm Grogan have two sons, CJ and Grayson.
