InfoQ: Nicholas La Joie of Milwaukee - Most of the mayoral candidates seem to be shying away from the issue of traffic relief in Milwaukee. They seem to believe the topic has the potential of leaving themselves in a political quagmire, as the topic is one of local contraversy. Former Mayor Norquist was, by no stretch of the imagination, a proponent of mass transit at nearly every level-- not only to help alleviate traffic congestion but also to make Milwaukee a more vibrant, densely populated, attractive, cosmopolitan city. Although the notion of a downtown connector is not popular with willy-nilly suburbanite developers, politicians and loudmouth radio talkshow hosts, the office you seek is that of political leader the citizens of Milwaukee (not Brookfield, Wauwatosa or elsewhere). How would your administration address the lopsided spending of Milwaukee tax dollars on state highways (often times not even serving Milwaukee) versus sensible mass transit alternatives? Hopefully you see that busses, although necessary at some level, are not a reasonable substitute for a truly comprehensive right-of-way mass transit network and that widening the freeway system and/or just adding more busses is not going to do the trick. Thank you.

A: Sandy Folaron - Thanks, I wish I had more time to address this. As you may have seen, I am an avid supporter of public transportation. (Have you seen my Buses??) The City of Milwaukee must talk about public transportation options including light rail, connector and the expansion of the Metra line if we are to become a national destination. Visit my web site. Thank you everyone for your questions. If I was unable to address a topic or issue that concerns you, please go to my web site and post your questions. (or call 414.476.2967) www.sandy4mayor.com

Q: Ben of Milwaukee - When the Deep Tunnel was proposed it was suppose to handle Milwaukee's raw sewage and run off. Every summer beaches are closed and dumping contintues. I'm tired of excuses. How do you propose dealing with MMSD on this issue?

A: Sandy Folaron - Hi Ben, Let's define "dumping." When the media refers to "dumping" they are talking about partially treated runoff. This is often the result of uncontrolled sprawl from our suburban neighbors. Unchecked building and impervious surfaces add to waste water management issues. If you have time, MMSD offers tours. Although there is always room for improvement, I think that you will be surprised to find that Milwaukee has remarkedly clean water for a city this size. Thanks, Sandy If you take that tour, several mayoral candidates ought to go too! It will help them to understand better the role of MMSD.

Q: Julie of Milwaukee - How come your not covered more in the news as much as Pratt and Clark or Barrett ? It seems unfair or biased not to read or hear about you or the other candidates !

A: Sandy Folaron - Thank you Julie, This is a great question. It has been a struggle to get the same coverage as the 3 gentlemen you mentioned. It almost seems as if the media is determining who the viable candidates are. Be it the newspapers or talk radio, the coverage should be equal. I am disappointed that I am always mentioned as a "second tier" candidate. Labeling a candidate this way sends out a strong message to the voters. It has been one of the toughest issues for this campaign. Thanks, Sandy

Q: Joe of Milwaukee - With all of the people running for mayor, please tell me why my vote should be cast for you - Thanks

A: Sandy Folaron - Hi Joe, I love Milwaukee. It's my home and where I have spent the last 20 years developing businesses and working on neighborhood issues such as crime and nuisance properties. My experiences have been "hands on," not just rhetoric, but actual development and change. Milwaukee needs a change. New leadership, with a clear vision for the future. I come with no strings attached, no special interest groups manipulating me behind the scenes and no favortism to party politics. Thanks- Sandy

Q: Theresa of Milwaukee - Former Mayor Norquist endorsed extending benefits of city employees to same sex and unmarried. This was ultimately approved by the common council. What is your view and would you have endorsed it?

A: Sandy Folaron - Hello Theresa, Yes, I support domestic partnership benefits for City of Milwaukee employees. To date, it has proven to be a relatively inexpensive program. Private businesses (such as Disney) offer these same benefits to retain employees and stay competitive. The City of Milwaukee needs to do the same. Thank you.

Q: Lisa of Milwaukee - A J/S article last week highlighted your concerns about the education gap between black and white students in Milwaukee. It seems that there are so many other social and economic factors to consider in student achievement rates. Do you feel that this is a problem that can be tackled just at the MPS level? Without addressing the issues of why parents do not participate in the education of their children? Teachers and principals can only do so much.

A: Sandy Folaron - Hi Lisa, Clearly, getting parents involved in their childrens' education is imperative. The point made in my education plan is that despite unfortunate home situations, lack of outside resources and students that have additional challenges, every student CAN learn. The disparity between black and white children is unacceptable. Poor children can learn, black children can learn, hispanic children can learn. We have to stop making excuses for the dismal graduation rate in our schools. Thanks. Sandy Please look at my web site for more information on my education plan: www.sandy4mayor.com 414.476.2967

Q: Rosa Ramirez of Milwaukee - If elected Mayor, how do you propose going about repaving potted city streets and updating sewer lines? And due to budgetary constraints, which streets and boulevards would you ensure that Forestry maintain floral plantings vs. grass or concrete.

A: Sandy Folaron - Hi Rosa, This is a prime example of where regional cooperation is so important. Combining some county and city services would offer a more cost effective way to deliver and retain services. Ex; Combining Forestry, Health and some Public Works services would give taxpapers more bang for fewer bucks! Regional cooperation is necessary to keep our costs down and deliver services that Milwaukee residents expect and pay for. Thanks.

Q: Steve of Milwaukee home owner - I travel quite a bit for work. When I tell people I'm from Milwaukee, what is the 30-second message you want me to give to people I meet when I'm on the road that would make them want to move to Milwaukee?

A: Sandy Folaron - Wow, only 30 seconds? I travel a lot also, and I love to talk about Milwaukee! People know about us and although the perception of beer and brats isn't always what we would like, it has certainly given us a unique identity. "Milwaukee offers affordable, historic and diverse neighborhoods, accessible lakefront, arts, culture, nightlife, and the best ethnic festivals around!" And that is only the very beginning.....thanks.

Q: Joseph of Milwaukee - Sandy, i have been a supporter for a while. But I was confused to read your opposition to Harley's proposed new museum and offices near Canal street. in my opinion, it iwll bring a lot of tourists and jobs to that area. why do you oppose it?

A: Sandy Folaron - Thank you for the question. Yes, I am against the proposed HD development in the Menomonee River Valley corridor for a couple of reasons. The Menomonee Valley Partners have worked for more than 2 years on a strategic plan. This plan calls for mixed use including light industry (providing family supporting jobs), sustainable green space and housing. Adding a recreational facility that works against this proposal puts them back to square one! HD is good for Milwaukee, but we can offer more viable sites that DO NOT need city subsidies to work! Thank you, please call if you would like more detail. 476.2967
