Info | Bruce Ralston, 52, is a lawyer in Surrey, where he has had a successful business for 18 years.
One of five business leaders described by BC Business Magazine as chairmen of "BC's most successful public companies", Bruce has been a member of the VanCity Savings Credit Union board of directors since 1995 and served as the chair of the board from 2001 to 2003. Under his leadership, VanCity enjoyed its best financial position in its history and in 2004 VanCity was named as the top employer in Canada. The credit union is widely recognized as an innovative financial institution with assets of over $9 billion.
"He is a powerful advocate for -- and a force behind -- the company's triple-bottom line -- social, environmental and economic -- success." (BC Business magazine, Dec. 2003)
Elected to Surrey City Council from 1988 to 1993, he was a member of the civic group that included current Surrey council members former Mayor Bob Bose and Councillor Judy Villeneuve. He promotes planned development for healthy neighbourhoods for today's Surrey families. Bruce is also a former board member of Surrey Memorial Hospital and the Surrey Public Library.
Bruce's political experience spans from the 1970s when he first became active in the NDP, to 1996 when he served as President of the BC NDP for half a decade, until 2001.
Bruce was born in Victoria and grew up in Vancouver, where he graduated from public school. He has degrees in history and law from the University of British Columbia and a degree in history from the University of Cambridge in England.
Bruce is currently the chair of the board of VanCity Enterprises, a VanCity subsidiary with a mandate to provide innovative housing solutions. Recent projects include Conference Housing, a 64 unit non-profit rental for families in Surrey, in partnership with Conference Housing Society, and St. Elizabeth Home, a 28-unit home and shelter for women, in partnership with St. James Community Service Society.
Bruce is married to Miriam Sobrino. They have three children, 14, 12 and 9, who attend public schools in Surrey and New Westminster. They are active in their community through a number of community and sports organizations.
