Info | Born and raised in Vancouver, Shane has lived, worked, and engaged in community-building activities in east Vancouver for more than 35 years. His community activism began as a teenager when he was a founding member of the Ray-Cam Co-operative Centre in the Downtown Eastside.
From his early years Shane's interest in and commitment to his community has been evident in both his personal and his professional pursuits, including his recent volunteer activities as founder and Co-Chair of the Stop Lafarge Coalition and the Hastings Community Forum in Vancouver Hastings.
Shane also has long history of advocacy for social justice, public education, community and ecological well being, workers’ rights and sustainable business development. He has years of volunteer experience on a variety of boards of activist groups and commissions, including chair of the Vancouver City Planning Commission, director of the Pacific National Exhibition, East Vancouver Port Lands Committee, VanCity Community Foundation and Hastings Park Conservancy, member of Hastings and Van Tech Parent Advisory Councils, Burnaby and New Westminster Local Economic Advisory Council, executive member of the BC Co-operative Council, as well as president of the Burrardview Neighbourhood Association.
In his professional career, Shane has worked as the Director of Policy and Communications for Smartgrowth BC, executive director of the Worker Ownership resource Center, legislative researcher for the Canadian Union of Public Employees, coordinator and fundraiser for the Raycam Cooperative Community Center, executive assistant to former Vancouver East MP Margaret Mitchell, and as a self-employed consultant on business and economic development for labour, co-operative and non-profit groups.
Shane was the recipient of the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal for his contribution to community in 2002. In 1992, he was awarded the Governor General's 125th Anniversary Commemorative Medal for Community Service.
Shane, his partner Cate Jones and their daughter Shayla, live in the Burrardview neighbourhood of Vancouver Hastings.
