Info Eleanor Holmes Norton has devoted her life to fighting for justice on the major issues of her time, just as she fights for the District today. A forceful national advocate for justice and fairness for all, she was named by President Jimmy Carter as the first woman to chair the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and, before that, the first woman to chair the New York Commission on Human Rights.

By the time she was elected to Congress in 1990, Eleanor was recognized nationwide as an accomplished civil rights and feminist leader, a tenured professor of law, and board member of three Fortune 500 companies. Eleanor was a Co-Founder of the South Africa Divestment Movement the National Women's Political Caucus, and the National Congress of Black Women.

In her years of service in the House, Eleanor has fought for statehood, congressional voting representation and full democracy for the people of the District of Columbia. She simultaneously has brought home many new educational and economic opportunities to District residents. Since the attacks of 9/11, she has become the primary leader in keeping Washington open and accessible.

Before coming to Congress, Eleanor was a tenured professor of law at Georgetown University Law School, and she retains her tenure by continuing to teach one course there every year. Before being elected, she also served on the Rockefeller Foundation board, yhe boards of three Fortune 500 companies, the Board of Governors of the D.C. Bar Association, and the boards of several civil rights and other national organizations. She has also been a Senior Fellow at the Urban Institute and Assistant Legal Director of the ACLU.

A third generation Washingtonian, Eleanor graduated from Bruce Monroe Elementary School, Banneker Jr. High, and Dunbar High School. She holds a bachelor's degree from Antioch College, and both a Masters and a law degree from Yale University. She is the recipient of over 50 honorary degrees, has been named Washingtonian of the year, and has been named one of the most powerful women in Washington by Washington Magazine and one of the most distinguished women in America by surveys in national magazines.
