Info | Doug Routley grew up in the Cowichan Valley and he has always cherished the area as his home.
He was inspired by his mother and grandmother, both teachers, and by his father, a school district administrator. Doug and Christine Mazur, his wife, taught English in Japan and today Doug serves as a trustee in the Cowichan School District. He sits on the Finance and Education committees and the Cowichan Valley Safety Advisory Committee.
Doug spent many years as a bicycle racer, and that taught him the importance of teamwork that leaves nobody behind. He and Christine owned and operated a bicycle store in Vancouver during the 1980s, an experience that made him aware of the importance of meeting the bottom line and good employee-employer relations.
In 1990 Doug and his family returned to the Cowichan Valley. Doug took a job as a custodian in the local school district, as the shift work allowed him to stay at home to care for his two daughters during their preschool years.
Doug was elected by his fellow workers as IWA chair in the school district, and served on the Executive Board and the Safety Council of IWA Local 180. He has worked hard to make positive and constructive improvements to the health, safety, working and learning conditions of School District #79.
Doug and Christine have two daughters, Madeline and Sasha. Doug’s motivation to enter politics comes, in significant measure, from a desire to ensure his daughters and their generation inherit a clean and sustainable earth, a fair and just society, and an economy that puts its people first.
