Graduated with honors from Harvard College 1950
Reporter for Boston Herald 1950-1954, in which he wrote a series of articles on labor issues. He was assigned to cover US Secretary of Labor James P. Mitchell, who hired him to work in the Department.
Director of information, US Department of Labor, 1954-58; Assistant Secretary of Labor for International Affairs, 1958-61
Visiting instructor in Harvard Business School, 1961 - Present. The dean of HBS invited Lodge to join the faculty in 1961 to help finish his first book, Spearheads of Democracy: Labor in the Developing Countries. Lodge taught at HBS for over thirty years, wrote 12 additional books, and won several awards (including two McKinsey Awards for best article of the year in Harvard Business Review). Lodge also helped establish the Business, Government, and the International Economy (BGIE), a cornerstone of the School's required curriculum.
Candidate for U.S. Senate (R-MA) 1962. Lodge, who had strong views about issues such as foreign aid, unemployment, and civil rights, ran unsuccessfully against Edward M. Kennedy.
Helped establish the Central American Institute of Business Administration (INCAE)
Later books included The New American Ideology (1975), Ideology and National Competitiveness (1987, with Ezra F. Vogel)
