Info | Dr John Hunt is the party candidate for Brentford and Isleworth
John worked in I.T., has campaigned on a range of issues, including environment, health, and gay rights, and this year began retraining as a nurse.
John was born in Croydon, grew up in Hayes, Middlesex, obtained degrees in mathematics and computing at the universities of Sussex and Essex, and later completed a Ph.D. in computing at Queen Mary College, London. After working in Switzerland for 6 years, he returned to this country, met his male partner, and moved to Isleworth in 1987.
Following their separation, John became an activist on environmental issues, working with Friends of the Earth, opposing Heathrow's Terminal Five on grounds of air pollution, and running a 12-month project with schools in the boroughs of Hounslow, Hillingdon, and Spelthorne, monitoring air quality.
He has campaigned on NHS standards, being appointed in 2004 to the newly-formed Patient and Public Involvement Forum for the West Middlesex Hospital; and on local policing, raising the issue of repeated manifestations of police incompetence at council meetings.
He has campaigned on gay rights with OutRage!, encouraging a reluctant Government to honour previous Labour commitments, and participated in the arrest in 1999 of President Mugabe for torture, (thwarted by inappropriate police response).
Appalled by the lack of procedures and accountability at the Greater London Authority under Ken Livingstone, he has collaborated with a broad coalition of pressure groups to promote fair, open, accessible, inclusive, accountable and democratic government within the GLA.
John is monitoring the reaction of UNICEF and the Foreign Office to horrific child abuse in Pakistan. Infants donated by desperate parents to a shrine have metal plates attached to their skulls. Kept in cages, they develop as imbeciles, and are forced to beg.
Following a rapid succession of premature bereavements resulting from shamefully poor NHS treatment, John is retraining as a nurse.
