Info | President George W. Bush appointed Craig A. Kelly Ambassador to Chile on February 2, 2004. The U.S. Senate confirmed him on May 6, 2004, and he presented his credentials to Chilean President Ricardo Lagos at the La Moneda Palace on September 9, 2004.
A career member of the Senior Foreign Service, class of Minister-Counselor, Ambassador Kelly served as Executive Assistant to Secretary of State Colin Powell from March 2001 to June 2004. Before that, he served for two years as Executive Assistant to Thomas Pickering, who was then the Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs.
Ambassador Kelly has served in a variety of overseas posts, including Bogotá, Rome and Paris. In Washington he has served in the Western Hemisphere and European Bureaus as well as at the National Security Council.
Holding a Ph.D in Romance Languages and European History from the University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA), Ambassador Kelly speaks Italian, Spanish, French and Portuguese. He holds a diploma from the Ecole Nationale d'Administration in Paris and attended the National War College in Washington. He was a Fulbright Scholar in Italy.
