Info | John E. Lange was sworn in as U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Botswana on December 3, 1999. He also serves as the Special Representative of the Secretary of State to the Southern African Development Community, headquartered in Gaborone.
Ambassador Lange served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Dar es Salaam until June 1999. From January to September 1998, he headed that Embassy as Charge d' Affaires. During Secretary of State Albright's August 1998 visit to Tanzania, she presented him, on behalf of all U.S. Mission staff, a Group Award for Heroism in recognition of their actions in the wake of the devastating terrorist bombing of the Embassy on August 7. He subsequently received the Distinguished Honor Award of the Department of State for "skilled leadership" and "extraordinary courage" in the aftermath of the bombing.
Lange, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, joined the diplomatic service in 1981 and has held a series of positions involving both policy and management. Prior to Dar es Salaam, he served in Geneva (where he covered African humanitarian crises), West Africa (Lome, Togo), Paris, and Mexico City. In Washington, he worked in the Bureaus of African Affairs, Inter-American Affairs, and Management in the Department of State. He has received two Superior Honor Awards and a Senior Performance Pay Award for his work.
Before joining the Department of State, Lange worked for five years at a non-governmental organization, the United Nations Association-USA. He is the author of two articles for State Magazine regarding the bombing in Dar es Salaam and the opening of a new Embassy building there. He also wrote an article, "Civilian-Military Cooperation and Humanitarian Assistance: Lessons Learned from Rwanda," in the Summer 1998 issue of Parameters journal.
Ambassador Lange is a "distinguished graduate" of the National War College and a graduate cum laude of the University of Wisconsin Law School. He was admitted to the bar in Wisconsin in 1975 and in New York in 1979. He speaks French and Spanish.
