He is now the official Conservative Party candidate for North Wiltshire in the forthcoming General Election
James was elected Member of Parliament for North Wiltshire in 1997 and again in 2001.
James was appointed a Member of the Opposition Whips’ Office in October 2000. In September 2001, he was appointed a Shadow Minister for Defence, a post he held until July 2002 when he was promoted to the position of Shadow Minister for the Countryside in the last Parliament.
In the past he has served as Vice-Chairman of the Conservative Back Bench Agriculture Committee, and the Conservative Back Bench Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR) Committee; a Member of the DETR Select Committee, and the Environment and Transport Sub-Committees; a Committee Member of the Parliamentary Maritime Group; Co-Chairman of the All-Party Minerals Group; Treasurer of the All-Party Group on Genetic Modification; Vice-President, Conservatives Against a Federal Europe; Chairman, Conservative Rural Action Group and Chairman, Horse and Pony Taxation Committee.
He is currently President of the Association of British Riding Schools, Vice Chairman of the Charities Property Association, and he is also an Honorary Associate of the British Veterinary Association. Until the recent dissolution of Parliament he was Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Multiple Sclerosis, Founder and Chairman of the All Party Group for the Army, Founder and Member of Parliament’s Group on Historic Churches, and Vice Chairman of the All Party Group for Deafness.

Mr Gray is President of the Chippenham Constitutional Club, a Member of the Wootton Bassett Conservative Club, Honorary Member of the Rotary Club of the Wiltshire Vale, President of the Chippenham Branch of the MS Society, and Patron of the Woodshaw Residents Association, Wootton Bassett.
Career
Mr Gray’s business career has included positions as Director of Westminster Strategy (Public Affairs Consultants) 1995-97; Senior Manager of GNI Ltd (Futures Brokers) 1989-92; Managing Director, GNI Freight Futures Ltd 1985-92; Director, Baltic Futures Exchange 1989-91; Shipbroker and Department Manager, Anderson Hughes Ltd (1978-84); Graduate Management Trainee, P&O (1977-78). He was made a Freeman of the City of London in 1978 and is a Pro bono Member of the Baltic Exchange.
He has published books including Financial Risk Management (1985), Futures and Options for Shipping - the winner of the Lloyds of London Book Prize in 1987 - and Shipping Futures (1990).
Military Service
His military service includes seven years in the Honourable Artillery Company, and he now serves as a Member of the Court of Assistants. He is a graduate of the Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme (undergraduate and postgraduate scheme), and a Member of the Biddestone & Slaughterford Branch, the Royal British Legion.
Interests
Other interests include the countryside, horseriding, British heritage and local history, the Army, and China.
