InfoDennis McNerney was elected to the office of Bergen County Executive in 2002 after being twice elected to the Bergen County Board of Chosen Freeholders in 1998 and 2001. During his tenure on the Freeholder Board, County Executive McNerney chaired the Parks and Public Works Committee as well as the Budget and Finance Committee. In 2001, he served as Vice Chairman of the Freeholder Board and represented the Board as the liaison to the Solid Waste Advisory Council, the New Jersey Legislature, and various education oversight committees.

As Chairman of the Budget and Finance Committee, Dennis cut $7 million from the County budget and led the crusade to abolish frivolous Freeholder perks such as the Freeholder car allowance.

As a Freeholder, Mr. McNerney was instrumental in passing the first county level campaign finance reform ordinance in New Jersey. The first step in this reform restricts County employees from using county property and equipment for political purposes.

An advocate for open government, Mr.McNerney worked to have Freeholder meeting agendas placed on the Internet and meetings aired on public access television.

Additionally, Mr. McNerney has been a pioneer in the fight to preserve open space in Bergen County. Since the inception of the Open Space, Recreation, Farmland and Historic Trust Fund, Dennis has helped the County acquire hundreds of acres of open space as well as approving nearly 60 park improvements.

As the first Democratic County Executive, Mr. McNerney is committed to providing open and efficient government to the residents of Bergen County. Among his priorities for his Administration is the continuation of the County’s Open Space policy, streamlining and improving County government by improving the quality of the services provided, and holding the line on taxes.

Dennis McNerney was born and raised in Bergen County, and is one of six children of first generation Irish immigrants. He graduated from Bergen Catholic High School, attended Bergen Community College, the University of Delaware, and went on to receive his Masters Degree in Public Administration from Columbia University. Prior to his election to the Office of the County Executive, Dennis worked as a municipal finance analyst. County Executive McNerney currently resides in Ho-Ho-Kus with his wife Catherine and their two children, Kevin and Julia.
