Info | Born in 1964 in Pollok, Tommy attended St Monica's Primary School and Lourdes Secondary in Glasgow. In 1985 he graduated from Stirling University with a Joint Honours Degree in Economics and Politics.
Between 1986 and 1992 Tommy led the fight against the poll tax in Scotland and became President of the Anti-Poll Tax Federation. On 1st October 1991 he, along with 300 others, prevented the warrant sale of a single parent's goods in Turnbull Street, Glasgow, and was jailed for six months for breaching a court order forbidding him to attend the sale. The warrant sale had to be cancelled for fear of unrest and the poinded goods were returned to their owner.
It was during his detention at Saughton Prison, Edinburgh, in 1992 that he was elected to Glasgow City Council to represent the Pollok ward for the first time. He is now in this third term of office. He became the National Convenor of the Scottish Socialist Party when it was set up in early 1999 and was elected as the first socialist MSP to the Scottish Parliament for the region of Glasgow. He pioneered the Bill to Abolish Poindings and Warrant Sales which had its successful 1st stage reading in Parliament on 27th April 2000.
In 1994, Tommy co-authored a book which chronicles the anti poll tax struggle, called "A Time to Rage". He writes a regular column in the Daily Record, the Sunday Herald and the party newspaper, the Scottish Socialist Voice. The proceeds from these commissions, along with half his salary as an MSP, are donated to the socialist movement and community causes.
Tommy's passion outside of politics is for football. He plays for Baillieston Juniors and supports Motherwell Football Club, managed by his friend Billy Davies. His favourite author is John Pilger and as a Marxist, his political inspiration is found in the life and works of John MacLean, Leon Trotsky, V.I. Lenin, Che Guevara, Fidel Castro and Tony Benn.
