Info | Born in 1966, Tom hails from Ryton, Tyne and Wear, a former mining community in the North East of England. After Ryton Comprehensive School Tom went on to Reading University, where he read Physics and Meteorology. Tom then moved to Wales to study for an MSc and then PhD in Physical Oceanography at the University of Wales Bangor. After gaining his PhD Tom then moved to Canada, to work at the Institute of Ocean Sciences on Vancouver Island. Following his return to the University of Wales Bangor, Tom was awarded NERC Post Doctoral (1999) and NERC Advanced (2002) Fellowships. He has published over 30 papers in international science journals and currently teaches courses on Oceanography, Climate and Climate change.
Tom has been an active member of the Liberal Democrats since his University days and his served the party in many ways including membership of various committees (included the Federal Executive) and being a leading campaigner in Roger Roberts 1992 and 1997 attempts to win the Conwy constituency.
Tom now lives with his partner Linda (a Chartered Surveyor) in Northop, just outside the Wrexham constituency. He contested the Wrexham seat in the 2003 Assembly Elections and co-ordinated the 2004 local election campaign in the town for the Liberal Democrats (result: 3 LD gains from Labour, and the Lib Dems polled more votes than the Tory, Plaid and Forward Wales put together, finishing less than a 1,000 votes behind Labour). Tom also co-ordinated the campaign opposing Labour plans to close sub-post offices in Wrexham, sadly 2 have been closed but a third, Townhill, has been saved. He is currently co-ordinating the local campaign to have the council tax scrapped and replaced by a local income tax.
Tom has a major political interest in climate change and how we can work to minimise its effect. As an environmental scientist Tom is only too aware of the dangers that climate change poses to our society. He is keen to use his expertise to convince people to move to a more sustainable way of life.
Away from the sea and politics, Tom interests include playing Trombone in a Dixieland Jazzband and getting out into the Cefn Gwlad with his hicking boots/ mountain bike/ cross-country skies.
