InfoSTUART, Charles Edward, a Representative and a Senator from Michigan; born near Waterloo, Columbia County, N.Y., November 25, 1810; studied law; admitted to the bar in 1832 and commenced practice in Waterloo; moved to Michigan in 1835 and settled in Kalamazoo; member, State house of representatives 1842; elected as a Democrat to the Thirtieth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Edward Bradley, who never qualified, and served from December 6, 1847, to March 3, 1849; unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1848; elected to the Thirty-second Congress (March 4, 1851-March 3, 1853); chairman, Committee on Expenditures in the Department of State (Thirty-second Congress); elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate and served from March 4, 1853, to March 3, 1859; was not a candidate for renomination; served as President pro tempore of the Senate during the Thirty-fourth Congress; chairman, Committee on Public Lands (Thirty-fourth and Thirty-fifth Congresses); resumed the practice of law; during the Civil War raised and equipped the Thirteenth Regiment, Michigan Volunteer Infantry, of which he was commissioned colonel, but resigned because of ill health; died in Kalamazoo, Mich., May 19, 1887; interment in Mountain Home Cemetery.
