Info | John Wesley Maple
Farmer and teacher, son of one of the first white settlers of the Duwamish camp in what would become Seattle, two months prior to the Denny party. Elected King County treasurer in 1892. Died as a result of a falling tree.
Maple notably placed a bet with newspaper editor H.A. Chadwick on the outcome of the 1896 presidential election, with the stakes being either man's whiskers. Maple lost when W.J. Bryan was defeated by William McKinley, though feared he would die of cold if his beard were cut at the beginning of winter. A bill of sale was drawn up for his "foot-long, silken and brown hued" whiskers to be cut the following Fourth of July instead.
