Info | Born in Edinburgh April 1964, John was educated at Forrester High School and the University of Edinburgh. He graduated MA Honours in Politics in 1986.
John was elected as the Member of Parliament for North Tayside on 1st May 1997, with a majority of 4,016 over the Conservatives. The seat had once been the safest Conservative seat in Scotland.
On 6th May 1999 John was elected as the Member of the Scottish Parliament for North Tayside with an increased majority of 4,192. He was appointed as Deputy Leader of Parliamentary Group and Shadow Minister for Enterprise & Lifelong Learning. John was a dual mandate MSP/MP until the Westminster elections of 2001.
John joined the SNP in 1979 at the age of 15 and has held a number of posts within the Party at local and national level and within the Party's youth section. He was the youngest person ever elected as National Secretary of the SNP in 1986 at the age of 22 and held the post for six years. Subsequently he was SNP Vice-Convener for Publicity and in December 1998 was elected as Deputy Leader (Senior Vice-Convener) of the Scottish National Party.
After the resignation of SNP leader Alex Salmond in July 2000, John Swinney was elected by the Scottish National Party as their National Convener on 23rd September 2000 and therefore became the Leader of the Opposition in the Scottish Parliament.
Prior to his election to the Westminster Parliament in 1997, John was employed as Strategic Planning Principal with Scottish Amicable as a business and economic development consultant for five years.
In his leisure time, John enjoys hill walking and cycling.
