I love Portland. This is the city where I choose to raise my daughter and build a life for my family.
But Portland kinda sucks right now. So let’s fix it.
We should all be upset about the state of our city. There’s not one person or one decision that made the city look like it does right now. And there won’t be one person or one decision that fixes it. It’s going to require all of us to fight for this city.
For twenty years I have been serving this community. I’ve lived and worked in East County. I’ve learned how to serve the public from some incredible public servants, including my former boss and mentor Portland City Commissioner Nick Fish. I’ve fought for Social Security and to prevent foreclosures on US Senator Jeff Merkley’s staff. I’ve protected middle school students from falling into the gang life. I’ve met with hundreds of neighbors, families, children, and business owners. I’ve met fifth-generation Portlanders and newly arrived immigrants. I’m going to continue listening to the lived experiences of our neighbors. And I’m ready to fight for our community in City Hall.
I believe that government can be a tool to make people’s lives just a little easier. Portland needs leaders who have the experience in the community, know where we’re coming from, have a plan for where we go next, and the ability to work together. I am ready to guide Portland through our next great chapter.
It’s unacceptable what is happening in our community. We have too many neighbors suffering on our streets with untreated addiction and mental illness. And we have even more neighbors who don’t feel safe in their community, and that nothing happens when they ask their government for help. Needles, trash, tents, and bad behavior pollute our streets, our parks, and our public spaces. Gun violence and crime are a plague on our community.
Portland has a lot of needs. We need opportunities for young people to do something positive with their time, to find jobs and recreation. We need housing for neighbors who have no option but to sleep on our streets. We need affordable housing for all of our neighbors, not just those on the streets. We need addiction treatment and mental health options to be easily available. We need new sidewalks and street lights. We need trash picked up and graffiti erased. We need potholes to get filled. And we need positive reasons for neighbors to come out and activate our community with music, art, and nature. We need to invest in our people, because the people of Portland are what makes Portland special.
I’m ready to fix Portland. I hope you’ll join me.
