Info | Jerry Ouellette is currently MPP for Oshawa, and Northern Development and Mines Critic for the Official Opposition. He has been re-nominated as the PC Party Candidate for this riding in the coming General Election, October 2007.
Jerry was elected to the Ontario Legislature for the first time in June 1995 and re-elected by the people of Oshawa on June 3, 1999 and, again, on October 2, 2003.
Jerry previously served as Minister of Natural Resources from April 2002 until October 2003 in the Eves government. From June 1999 until April 2002, he was Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Northern Development and Mines.
Prior to that, he served as the Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Transportation, and as Chair of the Standing Committee on the Administration of Justice. He also served as Chair of the Standing Committee of the Legislative Assembly.
In April 1998, Jerry tabled a resolution in the Ontario Legislature to reduce sulphur in gasoline that, if acted upon, would improve air quality in Ontario. In June of that year, following the efforts of Jerry and numerous organizations on this issue, the federal government reduced the allowable amount of sulfur in Canadian gasoline.
In 2000, he was invited and presented to a United States Senate Committee looking for his input regarding his Private Member's Bill on invading species and ballast water discharge.
Jerry also successfully introduced a number of Bills, some of which called for victims to be present at parole board hearings, recognized Terry Fox for his accomplishments, demanded performance evaluations for judges, and called for the direct election of the Regional Chair for the Region of Durham.
Born in Oshawa, Jerry is an honour graduate of Durham College in Business Administration. Prior to entering politics, he ran a lumber operation and a national consulting firm. As an active member of the community, he is one of Canada's only seven Chief and Queen Scouts, and an accomplished international dart competitor.
Jerry has served as a member of the Board of Governors for Durham College, and has been very active in numerous local, provincial and national conservation organizations. He is a 27-year member of the Oshawa Naval Veterans' Association. Jerry has always been active in outdoor sporting activities.
Jerry and his wife, Dianne, have two sons: Josh and Garrett.
