Info | Victoria was born in the immigrant community of Ventura County California to a lower-class single mother of six children. Her mother, who is a survivor of domestic violence, was unable to keep a financially or domestically stable environment due to her substance use disorder, so she & her siblings faced childhood homelessness and food insecurity. She and her siblings were taken in occasionally and raised by her grandmother, who immigrated to California when she was about 18, and also a single mother of six who survived domestic violence and worked tirelessly at the local Sunkist Factory until her retirement.
From an early age, Victoria grew up with a deep understanding of income inequalities and social/criminal injustices, and how hard it is for children to break the generational cycle of drug abuse, poverty, and violence. Due to these challenges as a kid, Victoria never thought the American dream was something afforded to kids like her, she only hoped for stability and security. She, like many, survived her upbringing due to Medicaid, WIC, and food stamps and knows firsthand how programs like these save people. Growing up her mother relied on neighbors and family for childcare, she jokingly recalls horror stories of government powdered milk with her siblings, and she has experienced far too many hardships that her driving force is preventing others from having to go through the same disadvantages.
After seeing a late-night advertisement of a man climbing a mountain and upon reaching the top transforming into a U.S. Marine in elementary school, Victoria knew she wanted to serve her country. Due to her older brother’s involvement in local gang and drug activities, they dropped out of school, Victoria became a teen mom and was determined to be the first in her family to graduate high school. A couple of years after she graduated high school she enlisted in the Navy and was stationed in Virginia in 2011 serving onboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt, USS Bataan, and some time at Naval Station Oceana; ultimately calling Virginia Beach her home. She holds a bachelor’s in Political Science, becoming the first in her family to attend and graduate college and become a homeowner. Victoria has worked as a DoD contractor since leaving service and has volunteered for the city as an election worker, and numerous local organizations, Moms Demand Action being the one that inspired her to run.
Growing up in a small rural town taught her the value of lending a helping hand and the importance of community service. Victoria’s enlistment in the United States Navy furthered her commitment to serve, along with her unwavering support for veterans and military families. Victoria uses her life experiences to be true to herself and her purpose, which is to serve the hard-working families of the new 20th District as the Democratic candidate.
