InfoSheriff Troyer has served with the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department since 1985, with previous assignments including patrol deputy in Lakewood, University Place, and the Peninsula Detachment. He also held several special assignments including Community Support Team, Crime Stoppers, Burglary Reduction Team, and FBI Gang Task Force, where he received special commissions from the DEA and FBI. He was later promoted to detective and was appointed as the Sheriff’s Department’s public information officer from 1999 to 2020.


Sheriff Troyer spent much of his career as one of the foremost public information officers in the region. He represented the Sheriff’s Department in the media by informing the community of the department’s efforts and concerns in circumstances of crisis. He was instrumental in producing “The Sheriff’s Report” for cable television and in hosting the AM radio talk show “Cop Talk," as well as coordinating appearances on the national television shows “COPS” and “JAIL” and the local show “Washington’s Most Wanted."


Sheriff Troyer has been recognized with a Medal of Merit five times in his career as well as a Lifesaving Award, two patrol Impact Awards, and an Excellence in Traffic Safety Award from the Washington Traffic Safety Commission.


He has been involved in numerous community projects including: Toys for Tots, Mission to Mexico, Law Enforcement Youth Camp, Groove Music for Youth, Charlie’s Dinosaur, Special Olympics, and the Foster Parents Association of Washington. At the time of his election, Sheriff Troyer was the executive director at Crime Stoppers, a member of the TAPCO Credit Union Board of Directors, and a commissioner with the Washington State Gambling Commission.
