Info | Deborah Ortiz was elected to the 6th State Senate District in November 1998 and re-elected in 2002. She is the Chair of the Senate Health and Human Services Committee and is also a member of the Insurance, Natural Resources and Budget Committees.
Senator Ortiz is the author of the nationally recognized law protecting stem cell research in California and is also responsible for the states landmark program guaranteeing college scholarships, Cal Grants, for students with good grades and financial need. And while her 2002 legislation to prevent the sale of soda in grade schools was initially met with antagonism, her work on childhood obesity prevention is now seen as the model for the rest of nation.
An outspoken advocate for those facing catastrophic illness as well as their families and caregivers Senator Ortiz wrote legislation directing millions of dollars into ovarian, breast and prostate cancer research and awareness programs. Building on her commitment to public health, she is currently authoring a bill to create a biomonitoring program to expand the limited research into human environmental exposures. Senator Ortiz believes this research is vital to the future health and well-being of millions of citizens and could help in the development of prevention measures for a full spectrum of diseases related to environmental exposures.
One of Senator Ortiz legislative highlights is the Michelle Montoya School Safety Act, which prohibits schools from hiring anyone convicted of a serious or violent felony and requires criminal background checks before employees are hired.
Senator Ortiz has been deeply involved in shaping public education reforms. She continues to lead the effort to improve the States low-performing schools as well as establish statewide universal pre-kindergarten programs, and expand successful after-school programs.
A former member of the California Assembly, Senator Ortiz also served on the Sacramento City Council, where she authored the ordinance prohibiting the sale of firearms in neighborhoods and requiring gun dealers to register with the police.
Born and raised in Sacramento, Senator Ortiz attended the University of California at Davis and graduated from McGeorge School of the Law.
