Info | SHANNON, Thomas Bowles, a Representative from California; born in Westmoreland County, Pa., September 21, 1827; attended the public schools; moved to Illinois in 1844 and to California in 1849; engaged in mercantile pursuits; member of the State assembly in 1859, 1860, and 1862; elected as a Republican to the Thirty-eighth Congress (March 4, 1863-March 3, 1865); chairman, Committee on Expenditures in the Department of the Interior (Thirty-eighth Congress); was not a candidate for renomination in 1864; appointed surveyor at the port of San Francisco August 11, 1865, and served four years; again a member of the State assembly in 1871 and 1872, and served as speaker the first year; appointed by President Grant collector of customs at San Francisco, Calif., and served from July 1, 1872, to August 10, 1880; resumed mercantile pursuits; died in San Francisco, Calif., February 21, 1897; interment in the Masonic Cemetery.
