Info | Mike and his wife, Lynn, have spent their lives working and raising their family in Algoma-Manitoulin. Mike travels from community to community, listening to your ideas and concerns. He lives the Northern way of life and know that it is worth fighting for.
For twenty years, Mike has been the strong and trusted voice at Queen’s Park, working and advocating for a better Algoma-Manitoulin. Mike is an experienced, respected leader whose actions make a difference.
First elected in 1987, Mike served in David Peterson’s government as the Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Mines. He advanced many issues important to Northerners and was involved in the creation of the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund.
While in opposition, Mike continued to be a vocal advocate for his constituents and for Northern issues. He served on numerous legislative committees and in various roles, including Deputy Speaker, Deputy Whip, and as critic for Northern Development, Natural Resources, Native Affairs, and Seniors’ Issues.
In 2003 Mike won a fifth consecutive term and was appointed by Premier McGuinty as Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Natural Resources and Aboriginal Affairs, as well as chair of the Cabinet committee on education policy. In 2005 he was elected Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario by his colleagues.
Mike graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from the University of Western Ontario and subsequently earned a diploma from Humber College of Applied Arts and Technologies.
From 1974 to 1987 Mike managed a small business and worked as a funeral director on Manitoulin Island. He has always been an active member of the community, serving as the Deputy Mayor of Gore Bay and President of the Manitoulin Municipal Association. He was a director of the Gore Bay Curling Club and a Past President of the Rotary Club of Gore Bay.
Mike lives in Kagawong on Manitoulin Island. He and his wife, Lynn, have four daughters.
