Info | Barry Devolin was born in Peterborough and grew up in Haliburton. His father Douglas was principal of the J. Douglas Hodgson Elementary School in Haliburton for 25 years. His mother June was born in Haliburton County and is a retired teacher and homemaker. Today, Barry's parents and brother Brent (and his family) continue to live in Haliburton County.
The defining experience in high school for Barry was his selection as an International Exchange Student by the Haliburton Rotary Club. As a result, Barry spent a year in the Netherlands, and travelled extensively throughout Europe.
After his year abroad, Barry wanted to become a diplomat. As a result, he decided to move to Ottawa to study Political Science at Carleton University, where he graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in 1985.
Subsequently, Barry attended graduate school at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. While there, Barry was awarded a full assistantship by New York State and taught undergraduate courses on the Legislative Process and an Introduction to American Government. In 1987, Barry graduated with a Master's Degree in Political Science.
From 1988 to 1993, Barry sold real estate in a partnership with Chris Hodgson at RE/MAX Haliburton Highlands Realty Ltd. He also became a member of the Haliburton Rotary Club and initiated the Haliburton Rotary Mile road race (still going strong under Andy Salvatori after more than 10 years).
In 1993, Barry married Ursula Beachli. Ursula was born and grew up in Haliburton. Her father John is from Norland. Ursula's parents and brother Derek (and his family) continue to live in Haliburton. Her other brother, Dalton, lives in Collingwood with his family.
In 1995, Barry and Ursula decided they wanted to spend a year or more overseas before they started their family. In 1996, Barry and Ursula moved to South Korea where Barry earned a position as an English teacher at the Pusan University of Foreign Studies.
In 2002, Barry and Ursula were thrilled to welcome their son George into the world. Last year, Barry and Ursula decided to move back to Haliburton to raise their family. In August 2004, Ursula gave birth to their second child Molly at Lindsay's Ross Memorial Hospital.
