| Info | Edward R. Garvey is a shareholder and founder of Garvey McNeil & Associates, S.C. (f/k/a Garvey & Stoddard, S.C.). Mr. Garvey is a native of Burlington, Wisconsin, and a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Wisconsin Law School, where he was an editor of the Law Review and member of The Order of The Coif. After graduation from the University of Wisconsin, he served as President of the U.S. National Student Association and was involved in the Civil Rights Movement. He entered the U.S. Army as a First Lieutenant, serving two years of active duty. Mr. Garvey then returned to Wisconsin and attended the University of Wisconsin Law School on the GI Bill and with financial support from his wife Betty's teaching salary at Madison West High School. Mr. Garvey graduated from the UW Law School in 1969 and was admitted to the Bar in Wisconsin and Minnesota that year.
Following his graduation from law school, Mr. Garvey took a position as an associate with an activist labor law firm in Minneapolis, Lindquist & Vennum. Shortly thereafter he was asked to help organize and become the first Executive Director of the National Football League Players Association (NFLPA). The Garveys then moved to Washington, D.C., where Mr. Garvey served as Executive Director of the NFLPA from 1971 until 1983. During his tenure with the NFLPA, Mr. Garvey and the organization successfully established that the National Football League was subject to federal antitrust laws, and he established the all-important concept of using a percentage of the gross revenues as the basis for paying the athletes.
In 1983, Wisconsin Attorney General, Bronson La Follette, asked Mr. Garvey to return to Wisconsin and serve as Wisconsin's Deputy Attorney General. Mr. Garvey served in this capacity for two years and played an important role in supporting the development of the Wisconsin Public Intervenor's Office as an "environmental watchdog" in the Wisconsin Department of Justice. In 1986, Mr. Garvey was the Democratic Party's nominee for the U.S. Senate, and in 1998 he was the Democratic Party's nominee for Governor of Wisconsin. Although he has consistently maintained an active interest and involvement in progressive democratic politics, Mr. Garvey has continued to practice law throughout most of his career.
Mr. Garvey is admitted to all state and federal courts in Wisconsin, as well as the United States Supreme Court. He is a member of the State Bar of Wisconsin, the American Bar Association, and the Dane County Bar Association.
